FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE
Farewell my Concubine”, the Oscar-nominated and the Cannes-winning 1993 film is a grandiose spanning over half a century of the modern Chinese history. Within this framework, Chen Kaige narrates a love story about Dieyi and Xiaoyu, two male stars of the Peking opera troupe. The idea of depicting one dying process to portray the rise of something else is captivating. The national development only occurred when the ritualistic art form was eliminated. Such a contrast intertwinement yet the director managed to craft a beautiful and logical 3-hour movie thanks to his expertness of using semiotics. It is the reason for me to choose the mise en scene and semiotics theory as the main topic.
